This is one of the few photos I feel shame about having. The sighting of a serval is so rare and I was so excited when the announcement came across the radio. We were one of the first people on the scene after a mad dash to get there before the cat disappeared into the bush. Soon, tho, vehicles were swarming the area and the cat was obviously hiding and looking for a way to escape. I snapped a photo and then realized what was happening and asked to leave. I actively contributed to the distress this animal experienced and it's a moment I deeply regret.
.
We have a responsibility as wildlife photographers to be good stewards and protect the animals we photograph, to be silent observers and not harassers. If an animal changes its behavior because you're near it, you have failed in that responsibility. Being on a safari doesn't change that, and I share this photo as a way of sharing this lesson. While it's a goodish photo, it was not worth it.
